ABOUT

Stories must be told, and Opera is our medium.

Described as a “handsome-voiced” baritone by Voix des Arts, Doug Grimm is a young professional making his own way in the world. Doug’s work began in 2007 with the Savannah Children’s Choir where his love for vocal music began. He moved on from this group in 2014 when he began voice lessons and training to become a classical singer. His love for opera continued and was strengthened in 2017 when he attended Brevard Music Center to study under Joseph Evans. From here, Doug went to pursue a dual degree in Vocal Performance and Arts Administration at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where studied with Dr. Robert Bracey and coached with Dr. Arlene Shrut. He then attended Ohio University, studying under Dr. Daniel Stein, where he received a masters degree in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy.

Doug is a vocal storyteller, having worked in Musical Theatre, Jazz, Gospel, and Opera performances. Past appearances are at UNCG Opera Theatre, Greensboro Opera, Brevard Music Center, Columbus Opera, and Ohio University Opera Theatre. He has performed roles such as Sam (Trouble in Tahiti), Ben (The Telephone), John Brooke (Little Women), Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), and premiering the role of Mallarmé in Daniel Swartz' opera The Flower Cries Blue. A specialist in modern American music, Doug has performed a number of premiers of children's operas, including Be Yourself, The Showdown, and Allison's Voice. Doug's oratorio work includes Bach's BWV 1, and 182, Handel's Messiah, and Fauré's Requiem as the bass soloist. A thoughtful recitalist, Doug has planned conversational concerts in Ohio, Massachusetts, and North Carolina, all of which speak to Joy, sorrow, and telling the stories of the human experience.

A passionate supporter of the arts, Doug is also the Executive Director of OperaJunction, an arts nonprofit dedicated to the creation of project-based curriculum and resources that teach about opera. OperaJunction serves as a hub connecting students, teachers, parents, and artists to each other and themselves through opera. The son of two teachers, Doug has always sought to bring meaningful and engaging educational opportunities to students who might not normally have these experiences. OperaJunction's flagship program, "Schoolhouse Opera", currently brings opera to all K-6 students in the Athens County Area of Southeastern Ohio. This program, and OperaJunction, will continue to grow and show children and adults the power of storytelling taken to its musical conclusion. The goal is always to create lasting collaborative and comprehensive program so that all people, in all places, at all times might know that Opera is for All!
